In 1976 Xavier Roberts was an art student from Cleveland, GA.  He learned about needle molding which is a way to create fabric sculpture. He put this molding and quilting skills that he learned from his mother together.  Xavier came up with his first soft sculpture that later became soft cuddly dolls.
Later, in 1977, Xavier Roberts was working at a craft shop in Helen, GA.  He came up with the idea of adoptable dolls with birth certificates. He called them Little People. Then, in 1978 he started displaying and selling his “Little People” at arts and crafts shows.  He realized that people would pay to “adopt” his original dolls. After that, he and five friends started the company Original Appalachian Artworks, Inc.  They took an old medical clinic in Cleveland and turned it into Babyland General Hospital. Xavier was very successful with his “Little People”. The dolls were even featured in magazines like Newsweek, Atlanta Weekly, and The Wall Street Journal.

The name of these little kids was changed to Cabbage Patch Kids when Xavier Roberts signed an agreement for a toy manufacturer to make a doll similar to his original dolls. Cabbage Patch kids have been produced by several companies since 1982.  These include Coleco, Hasbro, Toys ‘R Us, Mattel, and Play Along Toys.  About 123 million Cabbage Patch Kids have been adopted.  That is enough to circle the world!

The Cabbage Patch Kids are brought to life at the Babyland General Hospital. They come out of a cabbage and are taken to the hospital where they get their footprints done and are treated like real babies. After they are released from the hospital the go to the nursery where they grow to become little children and are sent to school.     This toy was a major hit. Just think, it started with one man making one adoptable baby at a time. This toy has made millions of dollars and brought money to Georgia through the Babyland General Hospital in Cleveland. Due to the larger number of visitors it moved from a small clinic to a much larger hospital in 2010. It has had a big influence on many people. It gave girls a nice doll to take care of and love. Cabbage Patch Kids have been a huge hit with collectors.  A collector would love to have a "Baldie" or a "Red Fuzzies", these babies can be worth over a $100. Their dream though, would to own a pre-Cabbage Patch baby made by Xazier Roberts. These babies can be worth more than $1,000.
