Jim E. Casey is the proud founder of the UPS. UPS is the acronym for United Parcel Service. He was born March 29, 1888 in Pick Handle Gulch near Candelaria, Nevada. Jim E. Casey started his company in 1907 with $100 he borrowed from a friend. He and his partner ran the business from a small basement office. .Casey was a very humble man who worked many long hours. Even though there was a lot of competition, the company did well. Jim Casey believed in  customer courtesy, reliability, round-the-clock service, and low rates. These ideas are part of Jim´s slogan: best service and lowest rates.

Jim Casey's company was first called American Messenger Company.  They made deliveries on foot or using bicycles.  Later, around 1913, they used a Model T Ford as their first car for delivering.  They also began to call the company Merchants Parcel Delivery. In 1919 the name United Parcel Service began to be used.  In 1924, UPS began to use a conveyor belt to handles packages for the first time. UPS has had many accomplishments.    UPS was the 1st delivery company to be able to deliver to  every address in the 48 contiguous states in the U.S.  In 1985 they began international air service.  By 1988 they got permission from the FAA to operate their own airplanes and so they became an airline.  Today UPS is one of the 10 largest airlines.  UPS can actually reach about 4 billion people for deliveries. In 1994 ups.com was started.  Then in 1996, UPS began to offer online package tracking software.

The trucks of the UPS are a major symbol for the company.  The original plan was for the trucks to be yellow, but Casey was convinced by another individual to make them brown. The reasoning was, it would be impossible to keep a yellow truck clean. “The big brown machine” is the nickname for the trucks.

They have 216 jets that they use.  The company brought in $49.6 billion in 2010 and handled about 3.94 billion packages and other documents in 2010.  UPS serves 8.5 million customers every day.  Wow!  I am very glad that Jim Casey's original $100 business made its way to Georgia.
