John Pemberton started Coca-Cola. He was born in Knoxville, Georgia on July 8, 1831, but grew up in Columbus, Georgia. As his life went on, he became a famous man. To begin with, he graduated from Pharmacy School. It took hard work to accomplish this. Then, he fought in the Civil War Battle of Columbus when it began. Unfortunately, he was wounded while fighting, but later recovered from his wound. John Pemberton invented the formula for Coca-Cola, which was first sold as a tonic. He began selling his invention at Jacob’s Pharmacy in Columbus in 1886.
There have been many changes in the Coca-Cola Company over the years. In 1887, a man named Asa Candler bought the formula for the drink. He became the first president of the company. In 1894, Coca-Cola was first put in bottles to be sold. By 1926, the company began to expand the business overseas. Many new flavors of drinks began to be made by Coca-Cola such as Fanta, Sprite, Tab, and Fresca. In 1982, Diet Coke was introduced.
By 1985, the Coca-Cola Company had been in business for a long time. They decided to risk trying new ingredients for a new and better Coke. When people tried the new drink in a taste test, they liked it. Unfortunately, people did not seem to want the drink to be changed. Critics of the company called the new formula a big marketing mistake. The Coca-Cola decided to sell the regular Coke formula and called it Coca-Cola Classic.

Coca-Cola has been in business for 125 years. When John Pemberton began, about 9 servings a day were sold. Now about 1.4 billion servings are sold each day. How did they get all of these customers? Because of all of Coca-Cola’s advertisements! One popular ad was the song “I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke” in 1971. Other famous advertisements that attract the most people are the ones with the Coca-Cola Polar Bears. I guess if polar bears like Coca-Cola, then humans should too!
The history of Coca-Cola is really amazing. Today the company has about 139,600 employees and sells Coke products in more than 200 countries. That is great for a company started right here in Georgia. Hopefully, we all thank John Pemberton for trying new mixtures and creating the drink called Coca-Cola.
